NOTE: Project is now on ice, due to lack of time, funds and drive. Site moved here for storage.
About 20 %
of our work time is expended in searching for information and knowledge. Time
is wasted because what we are searching for is often unstructured and difficult
to pinpoint. This problem can be solved by embedding brief keyword descriptions
in filesystems or in the documents. These properties or keys are also known as
metadata.
The Work
Flow Metadata (WFMD) Initiative works both to create and to promote the best
standard for metadata in projects, with a focus on workflows and
trans-organizational documents (documents that do not strictly follow the
structure of an organization). In practice, the WFMD initiative sets up
examples, organizes meetings, finds and spreads references and publishes
relevant information. Our vision is to achieve practical use of the semantics
using anything from word-documents, html, web-DAV or even RDF as metadata
containers.
The goal is
both a standard and a method for metadata in organizational documents, so that
we can share information and knowledge over system- and organizational borders.
The efficency of structure in information can be seen as an infrastructure for
organizations and individuals to communicate without drowning in the ocean of
unorganized information.
The project
shall:
-
develop
a standard for metadata semantics in digital documents
-
integrate
that standard with existing standards
-
develop
methods that simplify information transfer between applications
-
focus
on organization-wide structure capital and knowledge sharing
